Hey, badass. So, listen, I will never not be fucking stunned. Stunned by how much money I get to make by following my purpose and working with people. So cool. It's like working with best friends every single day. It feels like I've won some kind of lottery, like it feels too good to be true. I think you've probably figured out by now that I pay myself around three to five hundred K per year, depending on my business goals, phases of life, phases of business, and how much I want to work that year, or how much my little newborn baby, Dictator, would like me to work.
And, It's just crazy, right? It's silly money. It's silly money. And I've been able to use that silly money in ways that I've wanted to use it. So while you will never catch me buying luxury clothes and driving a Lamborghini or whatever, for me, my top priority is security. Being able to pay off our million dollar home in Wellington in three years and now have zero mortgage on that is just like priceless to me.
Absolutely priceless. And while this kind of quote unquote silly money obviously takes a lot of time and energy to build. It was over three years in my case, which is still not that long in the grand scheme of things, I went hard, but the thing is that. I was already hitting consistent 10 K months after just eight months in business.
And to me, that's silly money, like to be able to, in fact, that when I say over 10 K months, my first month exceeding 10 K months was actually a 28 K month. But I think that is absolutely incredible. To be able to do what we do right as coaches as online coaches, but I get a lot of people say, Hey, I get it.
That's amazing. Go you, but it's because you're using your skillset from corporate. It's because you were already a human resources professional. And that's why it worked for you. And it won't work for me. And that is just so untrue. I have been in group coaching programs, high level masterminds dedicated to entrepreneurs making minimum million dollars.
And let me tell you the diversity of niches out there is just incredible. And sometimes the simplest and silliest little thing. And it's a skill that you're like, really, they made that work. And you're like, you're a genius. It's genius keeping it simple. So I'm going to give you lots of examples in this episode, but before I get into how you can make silly money with the skills that you already have by leveraging the internet, let me zoom out for a second and just walk you through the process.
What does that look like? What are the steps and phases that you'll need to go through?
[00:03:46] Breaking Down Mindset Barriers
Firstly, you're going to need to let go of the belief that you are not an entrepreneur. You don't have anything special. You don't have what it takes. They're different to you, whatever. This mindset blocker stopped me from getting started for way too long.
Like I would look at the careers content out there and I'd say, I could do that. I could do that. I could talk about that. And I'd talk myself out of it. I'm not good enough. I'm not pretty enough. I'm not smart enough. I'm not whatever. Entrepreneurs are not born, they are made. If you love to learn, if you love to problem solve, if you get fired up by helping people, you will be an incredible entrepreneur.
So that's the first step you're going to have to go through.
[00:04:27] Choosing and Leveraging Your Skills
The second step is you're going to have to choose a skill that you enjoy using and developing, and you can teach it to people. So this could come from something that you've done from work, something you're naturally good at, something that you have some life experience in.
I started out teaching people how to write their resumes. You might teach parents of fussy eaters how to meal prep. You might teach couples on a tight budget how to plan their wedding. You might teach women with ADHD how to thrive at work. It could be anything. I have a lot more examples to go through.
But remember, people love to learn from people. Fancy degrees are out, life experience is in. And I always use this example, but it's so true. Who do you want to learn to lose weight from? The skinny dietician who has never had to lose a single gram of weight her whole life. Yes, she's qualified, but she's always naturally been passionate about Food and movement and sports.
And maybe she has great genes, like whatever it is, right? Do you want to learn from her or do you want to learn from that busy, stressed out corporate mom over there who finally cracked the code to losing 20 kilos without dipping into disordered eating? And she's teaching you how to do the same. Like I know who I would choose, right?
So you need to choose a skill that you enjoy and you can teach people.
[00:05:51] Building Your Audience and Offer
The next step is that you then need to leverage the power of social media to help thousands of people for free. So you create generous, valuable content that's original, that's different, that's fresh, and you use that content to build an engaged audience and help people win.
So the trust you build in your early days will be currency, social currency, personal brand capital that carries you for many years to come. So all of this free content, all of this generosity is really worth it. And then you package up your knowledge into a scalable coaching offer for your most hardcore audience members.
These are the audience members who want to get results now. They want the fastest route possible. They want to work with you. So you listen deeply to your audience. You create that signature methodology, that no brainer course that they love and they want and that they'll pay for, right? You do all of the market validation.
And you're able to sell that to the most engaged members of your audience, the ones who want that smooth step by step, everything in order, everything in the right place, and that VIP option to work with you directly. So that's the process. That's how the silly money comes to be. But where people get stuck is in step one and step two, believing that, they have what it takes to be an entrepreneur and choosing the skill.
And again, you have skills inside you right now that are worth millions of dollars. I believe, I honestly believe that. I believe that everyone has at least, let's say, three million dollar business ideas in them, probably a lot more than that. But whenever I work with a private client and they say to me, I have no idea what to do, I know I want to do this, but I don't think I'm anything special and I'm not sure what I can do.
We always end up having to choose from a short list of options. Every person has so much inside of them, and I think it helps when you bring it to life with examples. Because remember, this business is really special because it costs nothing to start. You have everything to gain. More freedom, more profit, more purpose.
Like, why wouldn't you? The only thing in your way is deciding what you're going to do. So let me give you some examples of how possible this is for you.
[00:08:10] Real-Life Success Stories
And I'm going to be calling out a couple of creators that I really appreciate. And I think who are walking role models of exactly what I am saying right now.
There's a YouTube channel called dad. How do I, these are how to videos by a dad who has raised To now adult children and he says and we still talk right so I've raised two adults and we still talk so I must have done something right and he creates videos on those sort of practical simple skills that people who are lacking.
a typical Father figure in their life may have never been taught as in like how to shave how to change a tire How to do xyz now i'm not going to get into the whole gender roles conversation around this, but it's a really cool Concept right? It's helping people out who feel like they never learned those practical life skills, which typically societal norms were passed down by that hands on dad who showed you how things worked, right?
5 million YouTube subscribers. The only qualification he has are simple life skills and having raised two kids. What about Rainbow Construction?
[00:09:30] Introduction to Successful Instagram Accounts
Rainbow Instagram account with over 200, 000 followers. And they teach you how to play with your kids. Full stop. Qualifications, not sure. Just really good at coming up with cool games that you can play with your kids.
And what about this Instagram account? A hundred thousand followers on Instagram.
[00:09:52] Empowerment Through Grey Hair
It's called Stages of Grey. Her whole business revolves around helping women to grow out their grey hair. To stop dyeing their hair. Now obviously it's deeper, it's about positive aging, it's about empowerment, it's about beauty ideals.
There's a lot that goes into it. There's a lot of confidence, a lot of mindset. I'm not taking away from the power of this business. But all of the content is literally grow out your hair, stop dying your hair and embrace your gray hair. And her only qualification was herself growing out and embracing her gray hair.
She doesn't have a PhD. She doesn't have special qualifications. She doesn't have certifications, but she has a very profitable business.
[00:10:44] Organic Gardening and Twerking Tutorials
Some other examples, grow veg on YouTube, 900, 000 subscribers. It's all about organic gardening, how to grow your own food, how to produce. Your own vegetable garden.
They've got like veggie garden planning apps. They've got garden layout software They have got what they don't have to get the most out of your garden they would be honestly multi millionaires Aussie twerk school. Okay 234, 000 subscribers on YouTube how to twerk step by step online tutorials Working out via twerking out.
I just made that up, maybe I should like, copyright it or something.
[00:11:25] Diverse Online Coaching Examples
Do you see how simple it gets to be? This person knows how to twerk. That might have come because they were a dance teacher. Or it might have come because they're self taught. Or it might have come because they grew up able to twerk it out and have fun and dance that way with their friends, their family.
It doesn't actually matter.
[00:11:47] The Value of Personal Experience
What matters is the value that they bring. The qualifications don't matter. Yeah. I could go on and on.
[00:11:53] Exploring Unique Instagram Accounts
There are Instagram accounts with over 500, 000 followers with creators teaching you how to pose for selfies. Again, what's the qualification behind that? Does it matter? There are creators with hundreds of thousands of followers teaching you how to sew.
Or upcycle clothing that you find in a thrift stores. There are creators teaching you how to fly drones, how to go paragliding. One really cool Instagram account I love is around consent for parents. Teaching people how to empower their kids and educate them around consent and body safety to dramatically reduce risk for unwanted predatory behavior.
I love it. And they have hundreds of thousands of followers, right? And what I love about these kinds of accounts is that on one side you have the child psychologist and the therapist and the this and the that, and on the other side you have survivors who they themselves have created this mission around what they've been through.
You have people who worked in adjacent professions, like people who, for example, worked in child services and social welfare kind of settings, and everything in between. And they all have valid, successful businesses with a range of different qualifications. There are creators out there who are multi six figure, probably seven figure entrepreneurs.
Teaching people how to train their puppies in a really safe and positive, humane way, not in a fear based and intimidation way. Puppy training. There are creators out there teaching you how to do surf photography for surfers. There are creators out there teaching you how to navigate a relationship when you or your partner or both have ADHD.
I'm thinking about ADHD love this account. The only qualification they have is having ADHD and being in a relationship with someone who doesn't have ADHD and navigating those conversations. They have over a million followers. It could be building a capsule wardrobe. It could be styling your hair. It could be having open conversations about being child free.
It could be so many things. I hope that this is getting you dreaming about the possibilities, because it gets to be so simple.
[00:14:27] Coaching and Expertise
When I help my clients choose their niche, we go through a framework, and it takes a while to go through, but essentially if I take away just the Big golden nuggets from it. If it's purposeful to you, if it's personally meaningful, and it's profitable, there's market demand, it's on.
It's a valid business idea in this model. A good coach only needs to be a few steps ahead of the person that you're coaching, right? If you've worked in recruitment for six months, You don't need to be an expert to a lifelong HR professional. You need to be the expert to job seekers who have no idea what they're doing.
They're absolute beginners. They don't even know how to pull together a resume. If you are a mom who has had a really successful and peaceful water birth, You don't need to be the expert to an obstetrician or a midwife or anyone like that, but you can absolutely coach any pregnant person who's aspiring to do the same and wants an extra layer of support outside of her medical team.
If you've built a following of 10, 000 followers on TikTok in the last three months, okay, you're not an expert to someone with 1 million TikTok followers, but you don't need to be. You can coach anyone with less than 10, 000 followers on TikTok. Because you are a few steps ahead. So your expertise as a coach can come from anywhere.
It can come from a hobby, a personality trait, a life experience. It doesn't have to come from you having some PhD in the topic.
[00:15:51] Real-Life Coaching Success Stories
Now on that note, I actually want to give you an example of one of my clients who does have a PhD. Okay, so she is a speech language therapist with a Ph. D. And she developed her business idea around helping parents with babies under 3 who suspect that their child might have autism.
Either through Family history or because of the behaviors that they've witnessed. And so she teaches parents how to closely observe their child and make really empowered and informed choices about the different supports and interventions that are going to help their child to grow and learn and prevent those more challenging behaviors in the future because you were so proactive today.
That is incredible. That's a million dollar business idea, hands down. But guess what? When we're looking at the competitors, there are competitors out there who don't have any qualifications in the topic, but they themselves, for example, are parents of autistic children or whatever their story is, and they are successful and they are wildly profitable and they are charging good money.
And sometimes it's really shocking for an expert to see that. And I understand that there needs to be clear communication of boundaries and scope. And when it comes to your capability and when it comes to what you're able to coach on and provide support around, of course. But again, you could have a PhD on a topic or you could just be someone who's gone through it and done it yourself and both business models are valid.
So as long as you are committed to learning, to expansion, to staying ahead of absolute beginners, to upskilling yourself, to informing yourself, You're always going to be an expert to somebody.
[00:17:45] Encouragement to Start Your Own Business
So do you have the innate ability right here and now to become a coach, to do this thing, to start this business?
Yes, I know you do. I know that you already have a skill inside of you that could make silly money. Your life experiences are priceless. You are a walking million dollar business idea, if not two, if not three. So please do not let indecision And lack of clarity keep you stuck because once it clicks into place and you decide what you're going for You can start building this thing.
So i'm gonna hold you back any longer go out there and get Decisive and get building It will be the best thing that you have ever done for yourself. It's certainly true for me. This is the best thing I have ever done in my life. It has changed my life forever. It has changed not only my experience of my life, but creating intergenerational wealth for my daughter.
It's worth it. It's worth committing, deciding, and doing.
